In the famous dance routine in which Gene
Kelly sings the title song while twirling an umbrella, splashing through puddles and getting soaked to the skin, he was actually dancing in water with a little bit of milk added, so that the water puddles and raindrops would show up better
on film. Kelly was sick with a 103-degree fever at the time. A common myth is that Kelly managed to perform the entire
song in one take, thanks to cameras placed at predetermined locations. However this was not the case as the filming of the sequence took place over 2–3 days.
Debbie Reynolds was not a dancer at the time she made Singin' in the Rain — her background was as a gymnast. Kelly apparently insulted her for her lack of dance experience,
upsetting her. Fred Astaire was hanging around the studio and found Reynolds crying under a piano.
Hearing what had happened, Astaire volunteered to help her with her dancing. Kelly later admitted that he had not been kind to Reynolds and was surprised that she was still willing to talk to him afterwards. After shooting the "Good Morning" routine, Reynolds' feet were bleeding. Years later, she was quoted as saying that making this film and surviving childbirth were the two most difficult experiences of her
life.
We are singing in the rain here too this weekend and happy to see it! We had a really good rain on Saturday and more to come! Enjoy your evening my friend! HUGS!

ReplyDeleteWe have had some thunderstorms, but they are spotty and very brief...we desperately need a good slow soaking rain. I've always loved a good rainy day.
ReplyDeleteI am a huge lover of rain; however, given that I now live in a desert climate, I don't get much of it, especially in the summer. So on those days that I do, I am definitely singing.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Singin' in the Rain...I love that movie. I actually am pretty wild about Gene Kelly. I LOVE him in Cover Girl (with Rita Hayworth), where he dances with himself in an amazing scene through some windows.
Have a lovely day,
Patti

Loved the history lesson on the movie...interesting! I like how green everything looks during and right after a good rain--not to mention the fresh, clean smell.

Hi Marydon,
ReplyDeleteI love the movie Singing in the Rain.. One of my favorites.. and I love the "Love is".
Have a sweet day, Big hugs~Elizabeth
Oh girl I want a puddle to jump in or an rain to sing in. We are as dry as a menopausal woman down here in the holler. Rain has traveled all 'round us...we could smell it, hear the thunder, see the lightning but not a drop. The ground is brown and the cattle are heat stressed. Maybe I'll do a little rain dance of my own....and sing...."Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head." Just sayin.....heeehehehehe!!!
ReplyDeleteGod bless you sweet Marydon and have a terrific day!!! :o)

Hi, Marydon!
ReplyDeleteThat is just a fascinating story about Debbie Reynolds. You know. I have never ever liked Gene Kelly, but I adore Fred Astaire. I always felt the latter was the perfect gentleman and the superior dancer, and this just proves it! I love him even more after reading your post.
Taking a break from my blog break to visit everyone who posted to me on my last post. Lots going on here, but I hope to be posting again in September. Hope you enjoy the rest of the summer.
XO,
Sheila :-)
