~ IF You Like Roses ... (Pt. 3)
In 1915 Jesse A. Currey, rose hobbyist and Sunday editor of the Oregon Journal, convinced city officials to institute a rose test garden to serve as a safe haven during World War I for hybrid roses grown in Europe. Rose lovers feared that these unique plants would be destroyed in the bombings. The Park Bureau approved the idea in 1917 and by early 1918, hybridists from England began to send roses. In 1921 Florence Holmes Gerke, the landscape architect for the city of Portland, was charged with designing the International Rose Test Garden and the amphitheatre. The garden was dedicated in June 1924. Currey was appointed as the garden's first rose curator and served in that capacity until his death in 1927.

Beautiful like you!
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful!! I love roses. They're not my favorite flower, but they are definitely high on the list.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to the Portland Rose Garden, though I'm only an 8 hour drive from Portland. My city (Boise) has a really pretty rose garden in a park downtown. Not as large or famous as the garden in Portland, but beautiful and enjoyable nonetheless.
Thanks for beautifying my day with these lovely photos.
Love,
Patti

My mom is back in the hospital (AGAIN) and this time they are treating her for ulcerative colitis, so we'll see what happens now. I wanted to go visit her today, but our weather is taking it's toll on me.

ReplyDeleteHi Marydon,
ReplyDeleteYour rose pics are the most inspiring ever. You always share the best info and wonderful photography.
Hope you did okay through the hurricane. My thoughts and prayers were with you and all our friends on the east coast. Mother nature has a lot to say recently. Earthquakes and hurricanes and lots of heat for us. Still triple digits. California's weather sounds nice. Hubby is there right now and it is 60 degrees in the late afternoon. My giveaway went to California for Createology. I should have hitched a ride too.
Have a wonderful midweek.
Love to you, Celestina Marie
