~ Holland's Winter Wonderland ~
This in the east part - province Overijssel., kanaal Almelo - De Haandrik, but it will have been the same all over the Netherlands where canals were frozen en lakes, there's a lot of ice skating in the Netherlands when possible.
While doing my family genealogy in Holland, I was
so fortunate to locate my 'cousin' Jan Middag. Over
the years we have had a beautiful relationship. Jan
sends me pictures of his many travels throughout the world , some of which I have shared with you before.
Harold & I have been to Holland 3 times ... it beckons constantly the beauty of the exquisite country & warm wonderful people. We have spent many weeks going to every inch of this fabulous country. There is no one spot I could ever saw was more beautiful than the other, it is that picturesque.
The highlights of our trips were the Delft factory, literally being invited to watch a master painter at work in the factory.
Seeing the homes of the art masters of the world & their works in museums.
OOPS!! A little slippery there, I'd say ...
Walking through the immaculate streets shopping, seeing the gigantic ships going thru the middle of towns & villages, the canals where the farmers farm, the awesome windmills towering into the heavens ...
The thatched roof homes, the cobbled stone walkways ...
Fields of gorgeous flowers against the skies of blue ... gardens trimmed neatly ...
We were there for every season except late spring when the tulips bloom ... sigh!
I remember coming down a country road & an ice covered pond with children skating, bright neck scarfs wrapped around their wee necks, waving warmly at us & jabbering in Dutch ... such a sight to see.
The street workers in their overalls wearing the klompen (wooden shoe) ...
the 'clog' has been in use for over 700 years
hand carved. Now they are done by machine & still decorated with bright designs.
A very old & exquisite sight is the city of Maastrecht sitting on the coast. It is one of the most architecturally beautiful & very romantic cities we've ever been to. the
history of this city dates back 2,000 years.
Swans floating serenely upon the calm ponds ...
I hope you are enjoying a wee peek at Jan's fabulous pictures ...

I am loving those photos thanks so much for sharing....
ReplyDeleteIt's always been a dream of ours to take our Mom back to Holland, she is in her late 70's now, and hasn't been back since she was 13. I have the feeling that it might not happen now, but to see the photos makes me very happy.

ReplyDeleteMarydon,
ReplyDeleteit's nice that you and your husband are able to travel. I think I would rather go to Holland at tulip time. Cause those frozen canals look so cold. Smiles, xoxo, Susie(She Junks)
I loved Jan's pictures, Marydon! What a treat to see such winter scenes from another part of the world!
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful pictures! It was like looking at Dutch Master paintings, which are among my favorites. Hope you're feeling better and sending hugs to you and Harold.
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon, Thank you for sharing Jan's pictures with us. It is a wonderful way to travel and see the world. I would love to see all of the tulips in bloom. I imagine it would be a beautiful sight to see. When you take your next trip, that would make a lovely time of the year. I loved seeing the kids ice skating as my daughter competed when she was younger. Have a wonderful weekend. Take care Your Missouri Friend.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures. Nothing like that here in Arkansas. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon!
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit there! The delft would be a huge draw for me too. How neat you cultivated your lineage and have a relationship there, too!
Beautiful post! Thanks for all of your love and energy for Miracle Makeover!
I appreciate you, grand lady!

Good Morning My Precious Sis...
ReplyDeleteOh what beautiful photos Jan shared with us today. Please thank him for me. I so enjoyed seeing all of the ice skaters.
What a wonderful way to learn to skate, holding onto a chair. Jan showed a little girl doing so, but I think this big girl would need the assistance as well. What fun it would be to try. It is on my bucket list of wishes. (I guess I had better get my feet and legs in better shape hu?)
Looks cold there today. I will keep our 80s here in the desert today. I am so enjoying the warmer weather.
Hope you rested well last night, at least a little. You continue to be in my constant prayer dear sis. I love you and miss you. All my love, your lil sis, Sherry
I am enjoying Jan's wonderful pictures very much! Your description of the beauty of Holland too just carried me away! I love Delft and would adore getting to see that factory...the tulips, wooden shoes, the windmills...it all sounds so marvelous!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry you have not been doing well. I hope and pray that you are getting better now. Crohn's has to be a horrible thing to live with! God bless you and yours...
I loved looking at these photos and history. While I love to armchair travel there, I don't want to live where there is so much ice.
ReplyDeleteOh I enjoyed this so much Marydon. You are so blessed to have been able to see this amazing country three times. I only dream about it :) I loved seeing all the people skating away on the ice!!!! When I was reading your narrative, I could see it just like I was there, so thank you for that my friend. I hope to be able to see it for myself someday.
ReplyDeletesending much love your way...
