As I sat drinking my morning cup o'tea, my dream
came true ... a gorgeous hark is sitting
on the bird feeder. As I glanced up, BE STILL MY
HEART!!! Camera!! Oops! camera on kitchen table ... how do I get off my chair without scaring him. After a couple minutes VERY quietly I slinked out to kitchen to get my camera that is ALWAYS on my desk, harumph!

He just sits there staring into the house, I snap the picture & he flew away. I was so excited ... you can never imagine!






So as the sun rose & my day started, I glimpsed at the awesome blossoms ...

~ A Little Railroad History ~

~ Railroad Tracks ~

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number.
Why was that gauge used?

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England , because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England ) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since.
And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels.

Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome , they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever.
So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder 'What horse's patooty came up with this?' , you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses.

Now, the twist to the story:
When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah

The Engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's patooty.

Last week I shared with you the new hardwood floors, hand laid from scratch, sanding for 3 days, then 3 days of staining ... in our front room & dining room.

Now it took me/us maybe an hour or so to BOX UP everything, move all the furniture out of the living & dining rooms, thus
creating a 'pathway' thru the kitchen for a week.

Getting it ALL back where it came from has been a challenge, as I do not like change. When I place something in a 'spot' ... there it shall grow 'roots'. Not so this time ... I still have a box of treasures I have to 'find' a place for between the dining & living areas.

Our cleaning lady arrived the Monday before Easter many years ago, with these (2) gorgeous antique bunnies. They are hand stitched & stand about 2' tall. The detail in the outfits & carrot is just wonderful. I
treasure them.





May your Easter be blessed & joyful ... may He hold us in the palm of His hands & forgive us our inequities.










This little Thumper is from the 1940s ... Miss Charlotte gave it to Joshua when he was a wee one.
She had received it from her aunt. We just passed it on to Joshua for his wee one to inherit one day.











This is the before ... a year go ... a soft shade of shrimp carpeting graced the floor










There is nothing like change! I swear I will NEVER be satisfied with what I have done with this house ... Looking thru the office doors that were installed recently ... we ripped out the carpeting in the front room, removed the old solid oak hardwood floors in the dining room ...

George has hand laid new hardwood floors from scratch throughout living & dining rooms to blend with the foyer & kitchen hardwoods he laid a couple years ago ...

The MESS from the 3 days each of sanding, smoothing, sanding ... ugh! ... & then 3 days of staining each new coat of finish ... so worth it!
