Some time ago, I had mentioned my sister & I wearing our feedsack underwear. Elastic was threaded thru the waistline, the legs were hemmed. Occasionally, as she & I were running we'd have to 'hitch' up our drawers. I can still vividly remember us 'hitchin', & runnin', & 'hitchin', & 'runnin' ...
I ran across this wonderful picture from Diary of a 50s Farm Wife blog & asked Ms. Hambley (Thank you) if I might use it to show you. Some of you had not heard of feedsack underwear ... here ya' go! Some still had the advertising right across the rear end.
And, then I ran across this little poem on the internet that is as cute as can be ...
Feed Sack Underwear
When I was a maiden fair
Mama made our underwear.
With seven kids and Dad's poor pay
How could she buy lingerie?
Monograms and fancy stitches
Were not on our feed sack britches -
Panty waists that stood the test
With Purina across the chest -
Little pants, the best of all
With seams that I can still recall.
Harvesters were gleaning wheat
Right across the little seat!
Tougher than a grizzly bear
Was our feed sack underwear.
Plain or fancy, two feet wide,
Stronger than a hippo's hide.
Through the years, each Jack and Jill
Wore this garb against their will.
Waste not, want not, we soon learned...
A penny saved is a penny earned!
Dresses, curtains, dish towels too
And pillow ships to name a few,
But the best beyond compare
Was always our feed sack underwear!
**LV @ livinatmemescorner.blogspot.com/ mentioned that 'when the elastic broke they were just pinned up ...' & she is right. TY LV.I am linking up with Donna @ http://brynwoodneedleworks.blogspot.com

Interesting, so the words across the bottom are nothing new. Hahaha
ReplyDeleteThey made everything out of these sacks didn't they.
I haven't worn the feedsack underware, but I have worn the feedsack dresses! Loved the poem!
ReplyDeleteI am very familiar with the feed sack cloths of all kinds. That is all we had when I was growing up. When the elastic would break in your panties, you just used a safety pin or tied a knot in them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute post....this was all new to me but soooo cute.
ReplyDeleteI love it all! Your fun memories and the great poem:@)
ReplyDeleteinteresting... so unique didn't really about this before, and LOVE the poem, so cute. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen them but my mother talked about wearing them. I guess you know how I feel about things from the past and how I write about them all the time. Love, love your poem...Susie
ReplyDeleteThey sound like they were scratchy but gee if that is what you got I guess you wear um. V
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon, Great post. Have a wonderful week:)
ReplyDeleteI never wore them, but I certainly heard a lot about them. Both my gramps told us stories about those days, the hard times and how/what they did to survive. But, they had each other and two nickles to rub together and that's why today, we have all we need because they worked and saved for us! Don't you know I am an appreciative kid and I loved them dearly! Thanks for reminding me of the good times. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThis made me smile - never heard of feedsack underwear! cute poem too!!
ReplyDeleteSomething that I remember My Mom telling about...thanks for the memories!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL...I knew about feedsack dresses but never dreamed about the underwear. I guess I really should have known!
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon! No, I've not heard of feedsack undies, but you've got me smiling! You've painted a cute little funny picture in my mind now! Runnin' and hitchin'! :)

ReplyDeleteWas so good to talk to you this evening. I love laughing with you. Makes my day.
Love these britches and I can just see you holding them up to run. What an image in my mind. I am still laughing. Isn't it fun to look back at our lives growing up?

Cindy
What an adorable poem. And such a cute post. I was thinking of Little House on the Prairie the whole time. I bet they wore feedsack underwear.
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful day.
Love,
Patti
now we never had the feedsack pants but I had some beautiful clothes made from the sacks like you sell. One in particular I remember was a pair of culottes and top Mom made that had sweet little yellow ducks on it. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is just too fun! Love the poem...I know my great aunt made all my mom's outfits out of feed sacks and sugar sacks when she was small! Took forever for them to wear out.
ReplyDeleteI can so see you and Sherry hiking up your drawers and running through the yard and fields, chasing butterflies and lightening bugs in the summer...
Have a great day- finally got my post up- too busy yesterday and too pupt last night. DH had a birthday yesterday and we just hung out and fed babies and ate way too much!
Hugs- Tete

I now spend a survey of bloggers with such questions.
1. Why did you create a blog?
2. For whom you taking him? Want to be popular?
3. How long will it keep going?

ReplyDeleteFeedsack underwear...nope, never heard of them before! I must ask mom if they wore those when she was growing up:-) I had to giggle at the thought of you and your sister "hitchin' and runnin'" hehe That poem is so perfect, isn't it! xoxo
ReplyDeleteInteresting post and fun!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet is that! I'm sure my Dad wore these as a young 'un growing up in Missouri in the 'teens. I can picture you and your sister runnin' and a hitchin' ;)
ReplyDeleteI never had feedsack underwear but the first piece of clothing I ever sewed was a dress made from feedsacks.... I made it for a 4-H project and then wore the thing on a trip to New York City. Oh if those people had had a clue of what I had on.
ReplyDeletehah, I actually saw feedsack fabric on your profile and wondered what in the world that was...now I know! I bet it wasn't very soft on the behind!
ReplyDeleteGreat Post! Sweet poem ♥
ReplyDelete*hugs*deb
Mercy, what a cute post. I've never worn feed sack undies but know those who have.
ReplyDeleteI am dropping in to thank you for the advice you gave my daughter, on her blog "The Artist's Life". I appreciate you pointing out that she needs to watermark the photos she presents of her husband's work - work which is, I agree, exquisite.
ReplyDeleteI am becoming an enthusiastic follower of your blog on this, my very first visit! Not many take the time to give good advice to young artists, just starting out. You didn't have to take the time to do that, but you did.
I am grateful.

Dear Marydon,
ReplyDeletethanks a lot for your sweet note, your words are always a pleasure to 'hear'.
I love the cute, nostalgic, image... Love is... It recalled me of my Granny making slippers and a variety of clothes with fabric remnants or from tired clothes.
Have a nice rest of the week!
Monica x.
LOL........This cracks me up. I've never seen a pair, the poem is cute, and so is your darling memory.
ReplyDeleteOh my! I think flour sack undies would have been more comfortable! heehee! And prettier! ♥
ReplyDeleteHi sweet lady, thanks for your visit. I have not heard of feed sack underwear..sounds a bit scratchy to me! (he he)
ReplyDeleteMarydon, I had heard of feedsack dresses but not undies! The sweet little poem cracked me up. What a cute share. :-) Sue
ReplyDeleteSounds itchy:) Have a fun day dear Marydon, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteCute poem, and an interesting bit of unseen history. I'll bet a lot of kids were wearing feedsack underwear back in the day.
ReplyDeleteI love this, what a hoot and a hollar, Char
ReplyDeletemy goodness! I have read about them in all the books I loved as a kid - but gee, they sound awfully itchy now that I'm grown up!!
ReplyDeleteThis story is just like the ones my Mum and Aunt tell. Funny to actually see them!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your 4th!
Leann
I truly enjoyed your post, Marydon!

I have never heard of feedsack underwear . . . they don't look very comfortable. Love your quotes on your side bar.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th to you!
~ Julie
Mama used to tell us about feedsack underwear! Love the poem! Happy July 4th!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I put a Thomas Jefferson quote on my FB page! Uh Oh! Someone commented and it was not a nice comment! I just do not think most Americans know a lot about our founding fathers. They died penniless and were in hiding. They bought our freedom and then had their own freedom taken away. We live in a very wicked world. Anne
ReplyDeleteOh how I love these sweet britches!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Africa where feed sacks were used for everything. But they always seemed so scrathcy
ReplyDeleteHello Marydon, we were clothed in feedsack glory when we were young and lived on a Dairy farm. Loved the poem. Smile! My Uncle owned the feed store so mom got the pick of the lovely flowery bags. We never even knew we could have new clothes until we were older. Mom was a wonderful seamstress. Love that underwear. HA!
