My Mother, Mary Caroline, was the most exquisite seamstress ever. I have shared tidbits here & there of her talent ... & how she 'fired' me when I tried to make a maternity smock when I was pregnant with my gorgeous son, Emery. Her words still ring in my ears ... Mary Donelda!!! GET THE RIPPER!!!

This dress was prob when I was in 6th or 7th grade. She would make all 4 of we girls new dresses for every holiday. Christmas I felt so gorgeous wearing this beauty. It hangs in my new room that I will share soon with you. Sometimes Mother was burning the wee morn hours to complete our pretties.
We were all baptized together in 1952 when she divorced. In 5th grade (c. 1953) we 3 older children received our First Communion at the same time. Me, always the tallest ... Carolyn 2 yrs younger in the middle & (my only brother) Buck 4 yrs younger.
My dress was made of pure nylon. I have it still tho it is graying from time. Carolyn had a darling pinafore dress. Mother stitched every stitch with love in the dresses & veils ... & we felt like princesses in them.
Awwwwwwwww, the memories of the sound of that sewing machine ... & every ounce of her love poured into her creations for us. Love you, Mother. Thank you for the wonderful precious memories.

Beautiful dresses and memories. My Mother sewed most of my clothes, too, although I no longer have them. I do however share her love of sewing and made many of my daughter's and grand daughter's dresses. Lovely memories. Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteA seamstress I am not!But my late Auntie Ang was! She whipped beautiful outfits in hours! Oh how I miss her!
ReplyDeleteThis Love is...is different too! I am glad we have so many different ones to share.
Your memories of your mom are so precious and priceless. I love all the photos and your beautiful fashions. Stop by tomorrow because I will share Sean in his beautiful navy blue first communion suit!
What beautiful pictures and what beautiful memories. My mother knit for me -- and the rest of the family. So blessed to have the afghans she made. Hugs and love to you and Harold.
ReplyDeleteOh Marydon, my mother was a gifted seamstress too, and made us some matching outfits. Especially for Easter, I felt so loved and yes, cute!
ReplyDeleteI love that story.
ReplyDeleteI can see your mother working hard to make those beautiful princess dresses.
What wonderful memories and a sweet photo of your family. I've felt very sentimental today! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful post about your mother.. the dresses are so beautiful and the memories..Blessings, Susie
ReplyDeleteHow nice that you still have some of those dresses AND photos of you wearing some of them when younger. My mother made many of our things but I don't have any of them nor do I have photos. I wish I did. Thanks for sharing your memories!
ReplyDeleteI can sew some things but I am much better at household things like table cloths, curtains etc. I so wish I could find a tailoring course but they are not available in my area. My mom was an excellent seamstress also. She made all our clothes and her clothes also. She was always dressed up with her beautiful dresses she made and her high heels.
ReplyDeleteThose are some sweet memories Anne! I love it that you have pictures to go along with them!
ReplyDeleteI used to sew dresses for my daughter when she was little. We would go to WalMart and she would pick out a material for me to make her a new dress. I'd come home and usually make it and she would wear it that night or in the morning. She loved to wear dresses. I would also make her doll a matching dress from the scraps. All I needed was a yard of material and back then it was only $2 a yard!
What a sweet walk down memory lane! You are so fortunate to still have some of those precious pieces, even if they are aging! My Mama made quilts and I have such sweet memories of her quilting:) Enjoy your evening dear Mary Donelda! HUGS!

ReplyDeleteMy mother wasn't much of a seamstress, but I do remember a store-bought dress that looked a lot like your blue one.

How blessed you were to have such a mother!
ReplyDeleteThank you for you kind comments. You are such a blessing to me.

Oh Marydon, what wonderful memories and such beautiful clothes. I can only imagine how difficult it was for your Mother and for you girls.
ReplyDeleteI always loved to hear my mothers singing and sewing on her treadle machine so I know how you feel.

ReplyDeleteOh how beautiful your memories of your talented mother. Communion dresses are so pretty. xx
ReplyDeleteWhere do you find all of your cool love is things????
ReplyDeleteMy mom could sew too and what she did with that old sewing machine. We should have no excuses not doing that with the machines they have these days.
They had pure talent. What would they do with the newer machines of today?
I remember mom's machine had all these cams that she would put in and it would do different things. Now we just poke a button or turn a little knob. LOL!
Love your dresses.
You were truly blessed... such precious memories and beautiful dresses!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful memories and so nice to have something to hold, to treasure each careful stitch, to see and remember the love that went into the creation of each special dress for you!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother taught me to sew at a young age and I've been making my clothes since I was 14. I know the lovely sound of that sewing machine whirrring! I wish I had done what you did and kept some of them. I'm glad you have such good memories of your mom!
ReplyDeleteNow those are special memories and beautiful dresses. A talented and loving mother you had.
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely memories...my dear friend. My grandma did all the sewing and I just loved it when she made me a new outfit to wear. Happy new week to you my friend. xoxox
ReplyDeleteAh sweet friend I do love when you share your precious memories.
ReplyDeleteI am in awe of you still having your dresses. It is just another reason why I have connected with you so.
Such a sweet Memory Lane Post. I wish I knew what to share with my post but will have to come up with something between now and this evening. lol
Right now I am having to run errands so I must go but I am thinking of you and Harold and sending you prayers for a new and beautiful week.
Love
Maggie
Those are beautiful dresses. Your brother looks unhappy to be all dressed up. *lol* I hated it too when I was a youngin'. I grew up in central Florida and one of the few memories I have of my mother (died 1966) is of her sewing a doll dress for me during a hurricane. My step-mom also enjoyed sewing and was kind enough to share that knowledge with me. I sewed for years but never could achieve her level of skill. Those happy memories stay with me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your happy memories. :)
Memories of Mom are some of the most wonderful memories we can have.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dresses!
Melinda
Oh, I love your post today, I have been sewing all day today with my mom who is 81, my daughter who is 31 , getting some little owl bean bags for party favors. My mom taught me to sew and I used to make all my clothes in 7th grade through high school. How I remember the seam ripper! I used it today. Lovely blog.
ReplyDeleteSorry for being SO late, Marydon. This -- and the accompanying music -- made me just stop to close my eyes .. picturing my own sweet momma's handiwork. I still feel SO guilty for not really appreciating her efforts (wanting something "store-made").
ReplyDeleteLove how you've preserved this dress, and can't wait to see that new room. :)
Hugs,
Myra
PS - Your mom's middle is my all-time favorite girl's name -- Caroline.
What wonderful memories, Marydon! I love your photograph of the three of you all gussied up! Thanks for joining Memory Lane Mondays, my friend.

Brings back fond memories. I can remember my Mom and grandmothers all sewing. I suppose it runs in the family! Everything I wore for church or special occasions was handmade. Wonderful picture of you and your siblings.
ReplyDeleteMemories are so wonderful. To still have your precious dress is such a tribute to your mother and the love she poured into that dress for you. Blissful memories...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful tribute to your Mother, she must have been a wonderful person. Thanks for sharing. ginger
