~ Love Is ... It's That Time of Year Memories ~
My Mother made the flakiest melt in your mouth pie crusts. The left over dough she would give we 5 kids to make brown sugar tarts.
My brother & I were sharing memories recently of that fabulous aroma drifting through the house. Mother only used Gravenstein apples as they have a sweet & sour flavor. They are an old apple hard to find nowadays, tho similar to the Honey Crisps. Mercy! we could hardly wait for that pie to be cut, warm, then sprinkling sugar on that crust.
One year Mother had made all kinds of pies for some of her clients & for our holiday celebration. A bunch of the neighbor kids were in the house running round & round. A couple of friends came with our neighbor girl & one of them stuck her finger in a pie ... we all said 'you're going to get in trouble'. Well, they waltzed out of the house without a care in the world.
And, THEN Mother came in & saw that finger hole in that pie! Good golly, Miss Molly! We 5 took a rap of heat for that stunt & the culprit got away.

ReplyDeleteHey Pretty lady,
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to make cinnamon pinwheels out of leftover pie crust.....I think I almost craved those more than the pie. I haven't made any pies in years, and now you've got me thinkin' I should. See how much influence you have missy!
Hugs-n-love,
Meri

Hi Marydon,
ReplyDeleteafter a very long summer and much doings here, I am trying to find my way back to my friends.
I feel as tho I have been away for a long long time.
I can relate to the scents coming from the kitchen of apple pie. I love making and baking pies. I usually take my leftover crust and roll it out, butter it and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, then bake. It's such a treat.
As for the Honey Crisps, aren't they just the best? Short growing window so we have to get them when you can. I also love fujis for eating.
Marydon, I have something for you. It's a long time overdue, but made with the heart. Please email your addy, thanks so much, Char
LOL cute post. I love homemade apple pie made with love. Is there anything better?
ReplyDeleteSounds so wonderful! :):):):):):):):):):):)
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon, A belated Happy Birthday. I have been able to leave a blog post and some comments tomight. It was very frustrating for a few days. I could read, but that was it. I so loved your tea pot and present from Celesina. I love the painting that she did. Your post brought back beautiful memories of my own mother's baking. So Yummy. Your little one is so precious. Take care my friend. Hugs from Your Missouri Friend.
ReplyDeleteWell, darn, that was not fair!
ReplyDeleteYour mom's crusts sound delectable.
I can remember competing for the pie crust pin wheels with my brother!! Love apple pies!!

ReplyDeleteA wonderful story. I think that I have more memories of Fall than any other season. Maybe because in our family we are more together at this time of the year.
ReplyDeleteSweet Marydon sorry I laughed about the heathen poking their finger in and you all getting the blame. It brought back so many memories at my house. I can't tell you how many times we all got blamed for others doings.
ReplyDeleteWoke up thinking about you and Harold so wanted to start my day telling you hello and wishing you a lovely week
Hope all is well
Love
Maggie
No way I would have gotten in trouble for someone else's bad behavior! I would have tattled! LOL I don't make a good pie crust, so I don't bake them. I have to eat them when the relatives make them or I buy one at a good bakery. My grandmother made the best crust- flaky and tender-yummers....
ReplyDeleteI've never even heard of Gravenstein or Honey Crisp apples! I smiled as I was reading your memory concerning your mom's apple pies and your friend poking her finger in one of the pies, making you the scapegoats:-) My mom used to decorate fake wedding cakes with real icing and rent them out. When they weren't rented out, she would have them encased in a wooden framed plastic cover. Well, one day my two oldest brothers and some of their friends made a hole in the plastic and started eating the icing. Mom came to rent out that cake only to find it half decorated! lol All of us 5 kids were grounded because my older brothers refused to confess!!! I just had to share this story with you since it's so similar to yours:-) Memories, what would we do without them!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh you poor thing! And during that time, we weren't allowed to answer back, right?...Christine
ReplyDeleteSweet memories....isn't it funny how seasons trigger memories from our childhood...memories are such a wonderful miraculous blessing to own....blessings dear Marydon
ReplyDeleteNever had the nerve to do something like that but..I did steal Granddaddy's chicken gizzard..and it wasn't finished cooking. My jaw has never been the same.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm missing my own mamma! She wasn't keen on cooking, but gosh could she BAKE!
ReplyDeleteBlessed memories!
My mom used to let us sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on her leftover crust. We'd roll it and bake it for a treat that was at least as good as the pie itself. Thanks for bringing back this memory.....
ReplyDeleteI loved this story of your mom's pies. I recently used some Gravenstein apples from a local farmstand - they were just in from the NC mountains - and they were excellent flavor and consistency for cooking.
ReplyDeleteMarydon, thanks for the info. on the little china figurine of 'Gladys'. Interesting that it could have been named after purchase perhaps. Claudia who sent it to me thinks it's a maid, I have to agree, she's wearing an apron and holding a hat as if she had just welcomed a visitor at the door.
Have a wonderful week dear.
Hugs - Mary
