As a child we spent countless hours shooting marbles during all seasons ... summer, autumn, winter & spring.
We thought it was important for the kid-lings to have this family fun togetherness for their childhood memories ... as Poppy gathered them on the floor to play. Now mind you, Mimi has done this also, barely able to get UP off the floor, chuckle! ... & what fun we've had.
Tatiana has wanted a 'pet' for a very long time. It was not feasible for them because of parents busy
schedules to have a cat or dog.
Brainstorm Mimi ... let's get fish. We finally got the approval from parents & off to the store for our first pets ... 0h what an experience of picking & choosing ...
Oh, mercy! decisions, DECISIONS!! Such a tough
moment ... a thousand choices later we FINALLY
have pets.
Ansel selected the biggest fattest goldfish ever!
I decided the kid-ling's needed to experience another craft from 'our' childhood days. We used to make these woven potholders as gifts.
Ansel showing off his pretty creation.
Tatiana with her partially blue beta ... she wanted a blue fish
& this was highlighted with purple & a wee bit of blue, so it
was as close as we could get. I think Jake is happy with his
new 'mom'.
was as close as we could get. I think Jake is happy with his
new 'mom'.
As children we would make these potholders before Christmas & then sell them door to door to earn money for gifts. We were so proud of making beautiful colorful
potholders to show off to the buyers.
Tatiana showing off her season colored potholder ... she did spring, summer & fall ... I thought that was a pretty creative idea.
Mimi crocheting the looped ends together for each potholder ... I don't think I'd have had the patience to show each of them how to do it yet.
James selected a beta also. His was more black ... & a frisky little fella.
It was really quite interesting to watch the kid-lings creating the designs/color choices of the loops to make their potholders.
Such precious grandchildren, Marydon! And how wonderful that you got to experience them picking out their "perfect" first pets! Sweet memories of time with you!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I was soooo into making potholders exactly like these as a child. We had just moved to Waco and I didn't have any friends yet, so I spent countless hours making potholders to sell!!

XO~MARI
That's so sweet and so much fun. YOur a good Mimi to those babies. I so remember making those too. I made many of them and thought they were perfect. Even used the ones my kids made. Good memories and lessons you are teaching them Mimi. Have a great rest of the day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day, and such sweet memories.
ReplyDeleteCreating memories and remembering childhood creations! That is what little ones should be doing:) Cutest kids showing their sweet potholders! Thanks for sharing! Have a blessed day my friend! HUGS!
ReplyDeleteThat is good keep them busy, the sweet dears. Now don't you have any more of that swooning.
ReplyDeleteHugs
What sweet Grands you have Marydon and what a great day you had spending it with these precious ones!
ReplyDeleteLove,
LuLu~*xoxo
Marydon,
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great day creating memories with your grandchildren.
Unfortunately, my Dad passed away when my sons were only 3 and 5. The younger one has no memories of him but my older son remembers only one thing about my Dad...playing on the floor with him! Your post brought this to mind for me so I think it is great that both of you spent some quality time with your Grand kids and they WILL never forget it!!
Hugs,
Debbie
It looks like they had a lot of fun choosing their fish and their colors for the potholders. I think I'll look for the loom and loops for this summer. I may need a refresher course...lol..Take care.
ReplyDeleteSuch fun! I still have my marbles! LOL- really! I used to make potholders all the time. Dad caught them on fire often, so mom could always use a new one. When my kids were small, I picked them up a loom and bag of loops and let them make up a bunch for me and their grandparents. I am so ready now to make them again!
ReplyDeleteI hope those fish are in seperate tanks. Betas are fighting fish and will fight to the death. The gold fish will produce too much amonia in the tank for the others. Even with a good filter, you will have to change the water every 3 days.
Hugs- Tete
I remember making potholders like these. Your grandkids are adorable! They each look very proud of their new pet and potholder.
ReplyDeleteAwwww, you guys are the best grandparents a kid could ever want! So much love and attention, everything any child needs.
ReplyDeleteI never did marbles, but I made those exact potholders when I was a kid!
Hope the fish live long, long lives!
What beautiful grandchildren, Marydon! They are cute as can be, and I love how you made those potholders together and shot marbles. So neat. Where did you find that weaving device? I wish I could find one to do this with Cecelia and Clement. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm so happy they got their new fish. Loved hearing all about them.
Hoping you are feeling much better today. Loved having you for a visit.
XO,
Sheila :-)
Hi Marydon!
ReplyDeleteI didn't read the other comments to see if anyone cautioned to NOT put the Beta Fish in together or with the Gold Fish. My mom made that mistake when we were kids when she was cleaning out the bowl of one of the Beta. She put them in the same bowl and they fought til one of them died!
I remember making the potholders too! I got them for my daughter but she wasn't too interested in making them. It took too long I guess! lol
Have a Great Day!
Angela
Oh Sweetie...
ReplyDeleteThe kids are growing so much. Ansel and James oh my gosh, and look at Tatiana. Is she not beautiful? Oh what a set of triplets for the day hu?
I love the idea of the fish, that is wonderful for a first pet. They all look so happy too.
Now I love the photo of Poppi playing marbles. He and Tony will have to play one day. Tony has always loved playing, and yes he does have all of his original marbles from when he was a kid. They are fun to look at.
Love the photo of you crocheting the edges of the potholders. You are such a GREAT MiMi. You are always thinking of wonderful things for them to do, outside of games.
Have a glorious evening sweetie. I love you and miss you. All my love, Your Lil Sis, Sherry

That is the only way we knew how to have fun. You just find things and entertain yourself. Kids these days would probably think we lost I am minds to suggest such things.
ReplyDeleteYour grandchildren are so beautiful and I love how they each chose a different fish :) Thanks for your comment at my corner - I can't wait to hear how the visit in Africa went. I've never loved anywhere as much as I love Ireland and yet I still have at least one Africa thought every day without fail! God bless -- dunlizzie
ReplyDeleteOh what sweet kiddos! I too used to make those potholders!
ReplyDeleteYou are missed!
I love this!! This is exactly the kind of fun that I had as a kid. I made many a wackadoo looking pot holder, and my grandmother kept them all.
ReplyDeleteI giggled because I ALWAYS tell my daughters that I want to be called "Mimi",and I want the husband to be "Poppy" when we're grandparents one day.
(I hope. I hope. I hope...)
It's so funny that that's exactly what yours call you.
Great job, Mimi!
I do believe you are the best grandmother on the planet Marydon!!!! I remember weaving the potholders too. And marbles...I was lousy at marbles, but I was awesome at jacks.
ReplyDeleteFish are the perfect first pet. I think you made some wonderful memories with them this year.
I hope this message finds you doing great.
big hug

ReplyDeleteWhat fun, introducing the grandkids to pets, potholders, and a game of marbles! Your grandchildren are obviously enjoying themselves, and I'll bet you grandparents were having a great time, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful family you have! I love those potholders. MY kids use to make and sell them for some spending money. It was amazing how people would snap them up! The fish are so pretty and colorful too. Love this post. Hugs Anne
ReplyDeleteWe've tried to do a nice sit down craft with our own kids.
ReplyDeleteI think it something best left for wonderful grandparents!
