Every year Harold, Mr. Dept911, goes to the Darnestown Elementary School, in Darnestown, MD to give a history of the flags throughout our country's history to the 4th grades. A whole cadre of volunteers speak/teach various aspects of the history of the Civil War, local history/heritage/culture, tour the local cemetery. Harold takes some Civil War & national flags that are owned by the Colonel William Norris camp, Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
Harold is giving his speech to the students.
The school & children really enjoy this day, & have a potluck lunch for the volunteers. Every year they present Harold with a plant for our gardens, such a sweet & thoughtful gift.
May God continue to hold His loving hand over each military personnel that defends each of us & our beloved nation. They are truly appreciated for the wonderful jobs they do to continue giving us freedom & safety.
May our Lord bless the souls of those departed that have given their lives for us & our country ... throughout the history of time since the birth of our nation.
I do remember Harold doing this last year. Such an important message he is sharing with those children. How very kind for the school to gift you a plant for your garden.
ReplyDeleteHow nice that he finds the time to share his sense of history with the younger ones. I love hearing stories from people who were actually there. The plant as a thank you is so sweet.
ReplyDeleteI love how Harold is keeping these memories fresh in the hearts and minds of our next generation. May they hold it dear to their hearts and pass it along when their time comes.

What a wonderful thing Harold is doing. Keeping our heritage alive. I do geneology and my ancestors have been in the Civil War, Revolutionary War, WW1, WWII, and my husband was in Vietnam. I believe what Harold is doing is truly an eductional and appreciated job for our nation. Tell him thanks for me. My DH and I went to our local airport yesterday to see the traveling Vietnam wall and I plan to blog it later this week.

I must have slipped somewhere to have missed your great blog. I love everything about it. Wonderful history stories and most of all the one about feed/flour sacks. Believe me I know all about that. We got excited when our mother made us a new dress from one of the sacks. As you can tell, I have been on some of your other post. I am so thrilled you stopped by my place for a visit. I will be back to see you again.
ReplyDeleteHi, I love what Harold is doing with the flags. That's what it's all about, sharing our passions.

How nice of Harold to take time share with the children. I am sure that learning history from his is much more enjoyable than reading a textbook.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad the school will let Harold do this.

Good morning Marydon! What a fabulous post, as this kind of ceremony and your lovely East Coast town bring back so many memories of living in Massachusetts, and also of my elementary years, learning about this topic. Thank you for visiting with me...the ceremony has past, but the afterglow certainly will last a lifetime, knowing that I influenced this child! And, isn't it nice to see Sherry back at blogging? I know that she mentioned that she has a way to go before being completely back on her feet, but it was nice to see that she posted. God bless her, and God bless you for keeping us in the know about this precious soul.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day, Anita
Wow - great post!! How wonderful for him to do this.
ReplyDeleteI know how much I learned spending time with Harold and am glad that the students can gain from his knowledge, too. Thinking of you and Harold and feeling so grateful for your friendship. Hugs across the miles!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful tribute to this beautiful country of ours.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

What an amazing post. Bought tears to my eyes as my Dad fought in the Vietnam War. God bless Harold, my father and all of those who fight for our freedom.
