These pink plastic candle holders held the candles to all 4 of us girls' birthday cakes for many years ... the huffing & puffing to blow those candles out after wishing for magical dreams ...
... in the 1960s I used these candle holders on my daughter's birthday cake ...
... in 2008 we used these candle holders on Tatiana's birthday cake at our home ...
... many a cake was made from scratch with Mother's recipes from this file ...
... as I was going thru each recipe I noticed that 99% of the recipes were for sweets, maybe this is how we all wound up with such a sweet tooth ...
... I love looking at Mother's beautiful handwriting, she wrote the (2) on the (r) ...
... and this is my MILs recipe box, that is filled with a lot of yummy casseroles & a few desserts that she used all the time for her family ...
... Ma's best recipe was hamburger casserole ~
fry hamburger patties, seasoned w/garlic salt & pepper light
... prepare any amount of rice
... 1 can of mushroom soup to a 1/2 can of milk to use as gravy ... pour over rice w/hamburger on top ... DEE-LISH!!
... many of Ma's (mil) recipes are from her church friends ... the one closest to the box is her handwriting ...
. ... many a summer day Mother filled this jug w/homemade lemonade, nestling this jug in a bowl of ice to chill ...
... Mother's seasoning boxes & tin still in great condition ...
... & these jello molds we kids loved making fruit jello with ...
... & Mother's measuring cup & sifter that made the flakiest homemade rolls ever tasted.
Those little candle holders are fabulous....
ReplyDeleteWhat I wouldn't give for all those tried and tested recipes!

ReplyDeleteIt's nice when you see and get to hold things your mother used - I think we feel that in some small way we can touch them again. What I wouldn't give for one more time . . . sandie
ReplyDeleteHow sweet that you have those! Most of my "best" dishes are sweets too.
ReplyDeleteI love the spice tins and handwritten recipes. I wish I had some of my grandmother's (on both sides).
Great memories, I have two old pie tins, my grandmother used to make the best blueberry pies just for me they were my favorite. I will cherish these as long as I can, and then my daughters will get them.
ReplyDeleteahhh the memories. I also have my moms green pyrex bowl, my pie crust always come out great when I use this bowl.
Marydon, it makes me a little sad to see these things. What a sweet remembrance. It made me think of my own dear mother. I remember those cute little candle holders. Hope you are doing well.

I remember those candle holders! Now I feel bad I just stuck the candles in my girls cakes :( These are so much prettier. I'll need to locate some and use them for their next birthday cake! Thanks for reminding us of some of the simple but finer things we used to use.
ReplyDeleteWhat great treasures you have.
ReplyDeleteRecipes from the past have good
memories attached to them. I have some of my Mom's which I enjoy looking at and remembering when she made them.
Enjoy your treasures!
Melinda
What a collection of memories! The candle holders are so sweet! Our family always purchased decorative cake candies for birthdays. We kids loved the sweet crunch!
ReplyDeleteMarydon, I enjoyed seeing your keepsake kitchen goodies. We have family keepsake recipes and utensils also. When my MIL passed away my husband wanted to keep as much as possible because she was such a wonderful cook.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy looking at the handwriting too. My MIL wrote some of hers in shorthand! Now, I can't read those.
I remember my grandmother having a measuring cup like that one and I still have a sifter like that, sweetpea! Ooooh, the memories.

ReplyDeleteOh Yeah...I remember those candle holders!! I too have some tin kitchen items that were my Mother's & Grandmother's. I sometimes just hold them & look at them & remember them using them.
ReplyDeleteMemories can sometimes be comforting & painful.
Have a Wonderful Day!!

OMG, I love this post! Love the candle holders, the tins, the pitcher and well all of it! When my Mama passed away almost 22 years ago, I took all of her stained recipes, copied them, and made a book for all of my brothers and sisters! It was one of the best gifts ever:) Have a blessed day! HUGS!
ReplyDeleteHow I remember those rose candleholders. So glad they survived to light up another little girls birthday. How fortunate you are to have recipes handwritten with all the little splotches that tell how often they pulled out and used. Great post. Stella
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful treasures, Marydon! And even more special are the memories attached to them.
ReplyDeleteOh those are just priceless treasures. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a wonderful day! It is raining here again.I am not sure how much much more rain our ground can hold.

Love this post...wonderful treasures indeed....blessings
ReplyDeleteWhat fabulous vintage treasures. I love them. I especially like yellowed and stained recipe cards. It is like feeling and knowing history of cooking.
ReplyDeleteMarydon, such little treasures- I loved them all! The hamburger caserole made my mough water!
ReplyDeleteSee, your making my mouth water, made me spell MOUTH wrong-LOL!
ReplyDeleteWhat great treasures! I also love things that have sentimental value.
ReplyDelete~Blessings.
Girl, I still have all my old plastic candle holders and use 'em. Bestill my heart, that could be my recipe box. I was laughin' the other day because it has my maiden name written inside the lid. It was purchased my freshman year in high school for home ec class. That was in 1966-67. Time for a new box maybe??? Naw!
ReplyDeleteYa'll have a terrifically blessed day!!!
I enjoyed going down memory lane with you!
ReplyDeleteMicki
Hey Marydon! What wonderful memories you have. It's beautiful to just hear you describe them. Memories can make the most ordinary objects treasures worth more than gold. I love how you saved you candle holders and used them for 3 generations. Now I would give anything to have all the little plastic what-nots that I thought were worthless when I was younger, like the sweet little nut cups and cake toppers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for always stopping by to visit. I miss having more time to do that myself. You and your sweet comments bless me each time.
Hugs and smiles...Tracy :)
Oh Marydon,
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post! How precious to still have all the treasure and use them! I keeps those great times in life alive and thriving :)

Marydon -- I LOVE this post! I used to collect vintage birthday candle holders. I still have my one favorite set: the ballerinas. How wonderful that you still have your very own!
ReplyDeleteAnd I collect and covet vintage personal recipe files. I cannot bear it when I see a well-worn box filled with much-loved recipes sitting in an antique booth for $10. It's so sad. I have probably 30 of these boxes and love each one immensely.
Unfortunately, I am the only sentimental one in my family, so most of my own family relics are long gone, but I do have the glass pitcher in which my grandmother mixed my mother's baby formula. I treasure it.
Such an enjoyable post.
What treasures Marydon! Would you consider posting some of mom's recipes???
ReplyDeletePat
I thought about posting some of Mother's & Naomi's recipes ... I may get around to doing just that. TY Pat, for asking.
ReplyDeleteTTFN ~ Hugs, Marydon
Hi dear Marydon. I really love those sweet rosy candleholders. My mother had that very recipe box and it too was filled with some wonderful recipes. I love that you love to see your mother's handwriting.
ReplyDeletehugs
I have a huge collection of cook books and I think my favorites are the church cookbooks....always good home cooking and casseroles in those. Wish I had room in my kitchen to display them. Hope you have a wonderful weekend Marydon. xo
ReplyDeleteWhat sweet and precious memories! Thanks for the sweet comment about the slipcover--don't worry, the only way the white will survive is a weekly (or let's be honest, monthly) dose of bleach. :) shaunna
