Four year old "Teedie" Theodore Roosevelt in 1862.
This 1903 photo shows the President, his wife Edith and their six children at the family home of Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay on Long Island, New York. TR loved his family and spent hours roaming the hills and rowing the shores with the children.
These words come from a letter that was written shortly before Colonel/President Roosevelt’s death in January of 1919.
'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

Powerful post, as always! Thanks so much for the kind words on my husband's Memorial Day post on GrannyMountain the other day. I thought he did a great job too, it was his very first time writing and like I told him, it just pours out! Blogging brings out the best in us...don't you think? I don't know if I told you, but I started a page on Facebook for Granny Mountain so that we can share ideas, recipes and just get to know each other better. Please come join and share!

Thank you for your encouragement on my booth that I am about to open. It's almost the size of a closet... and not a big one. Guess that is good to start out small.
ReplyDeleteSo you had many antiques businesses? My goodness!
With you experience you should be an appraiser!
Take care and thanks again. I'll take pictures of my booth when I get it set up.
Have a blessed day!

History is what we need now to get our country back to people that love it.

President Teddy Roosevelt is one of my favorite presidents. Thanks for sharing this posting. I also like history.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Marydon. Teddy Roosevelt was a wonderful predident and speaker. Every word of this speech should be adhered to today when thinking of immigration. It's OK for people to come to America but learn the language and be an American.
ReplyDeleteGreat educational piece!
ReplyDeleteYou are never too old to learn!

I have been to Sagamore Hill over 30 times! Need a tour? I taught school and we went every year!
ReplyDeleteTR along with Ronald Reagan are probably the two best presidents we ever had. At least in my opinion. His words on immigration are true today. Tell your husband I really appreciate his comments on my first blog. The whole experience was powerful. I see you are from Maryland. We visited Gettysburg several years ago. All those markers. And then it hit me. They all died during or from wounds they got during only three days. As a southerner I have always had respect for the "cause" but how great would the two countries have become separate?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, that last post was from Hubby, not Joycee.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post! Thank you. I always say you can do uch for the future by taking heed to the past. Our forbearers knew what they were doing and what they were talking about. They did not lower their standards or those of America as in these later days it has been done.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
