Do you remember those countless hours sprawled on the floor or kitchen table writing your name on the back of those darling Valentine's cards for class?
Do you remember taking a shoe box, cutting a slit in the top & being very creative with decorative papers, ribbons, crayons in preparing the box to 'receive' all your classmate Valentine's cards?
Do you remember all the wonderful yummy treats that our parents made for us to eat at our class Valentine's party?
Do you remember the decorating the house with crepe paper streamers & old Valentine's cards to make the house festive?
Do you remember those little heart candies that we made sentences out of, having hours of fun & then nibbled them away?
Mother always gave us little heart boxes of candy. We kids fought so terribly that 'she got more than me' that Mother literally counted EACH piece out into 5 piles, each pile having the exact same amount of colors & pieces to prevent heavy discord ... gosh! how I remember as we sat watching her every move! Isn't that awful ... kids will be!
Where did these wonderful simple days slip away to so quietly ...
Mother used to save those special little Valentine boxes & each year she'd fill them with her homemade candies for family & friends

My Mother's brother, Uncle Bill, was a bachelor with a very dry sense of humor. He loved to always get a 'raise' out of us 5 kids. During any holiday he would pick up the chocolates in the box, one by one unbeknown to us, pick a wee hole in the bottom & then as we'd pick each piece up to eat he'd tell us the chocolates had 'worms' in the bottom. Needless to say, he got the pick of the box every time. He still brings a smile to me thinking of how gullible we all were.
Congrats to Nanny!
ReplyDeleteWe are having a snowday today from school and I just got done helping my granddaughter write her Valentines for school. We didn't get to decorate her box cause they already did that at school. Darn, that is the fun part!!
What a clever Uncle you have. Extra chocolates for him I bet.
Judy
Great win! Laughed outloud about your mother having to divide the candy between ya'll. Sounds exactly like my house when growing up.
ReplyDeleteHope you've been well. I'm off to hunt some chocolates now. The photo you posted reminded me how wonderful they are! Blessings, joy and sunshine, Terri
Just before sitting down to read your blog... I was sitting in the floor packing little valentine bags with little boxes of candy, tiny conversation hearts, puzzles, stickers etc. for the Grandkids:) Isn't it fun? My ex-husband was the one to poke the hole in the bottom to get the good pieces. Funny, huh? Have a blessed evening!
ReplyDeleteYou are now speaking my language: chocolate! How ya doin', sweetpea?
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Connie
MMMM! what a nice looking box of chocolates! This has to be my favorite holiday!
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon,
ReplyDeleteI do remember all those things and maybe that's why I enjoy making cards and things!
No "worms" in my chocolate!
Congrat's to the winner!!!
Thank you for having a giveaway!
Warmly,
Deb :)
Times ARE a whole lot different that they were when we were growing up.
ReplyDeleteSchools don't allow the parties like we used to have . Such healthe nuts they are and the fact that it takes the students away form their academics! Oh heaven help us! It's one day in a month-let them be kids for a bit.
I'm sorry I didn't mean to rant
BUT woking at a school gives me an inside view to holidays at school and they are DULL!
But the memories are good ones!!!
Melinda
I sure do remembers those days!! Thanks for the fun reminder! You are just such a sweet soul, Marydon! I love when you visit and leave your kind comments! Please forgive me for not visiting more often! I am going to rectify that!!
ReplyDeleteHope your evening is restful and the rest of your week is filled with joy!!
BIG HUGS!

Oh Marydon, you are too funny! Yes, I remember ALL of those things, but NO worms in our chocolates!!! xoxo Julie Marie
ReplyDeleteha ha...My parents would do totally identical of everything for 5 kids..and believe me we all checked eachothers "stuff" to make sure they did not have something that we did not have LOL ok did that make sense :D
ReplyDeleteI can remember being so very careful NOT to give any BOY a card that said Love or Be Mine on it cause' Boys were just yucky!!
ReplyDeleteOh My... did that change!!
Love,
Marilyn

We didn't decorate the house, Mom didn't like stuff sitting around; clutter. The only holiday we decorated for was Christmas. And beyond placemats and napkins, I'm pretty much the same.
ReplyDeleteBut, I do remember making the boxes for school and writing our names on the back of those cards.
Fun memories. We'er hoping to celebrate Valentines Day with our daughter in St. Louis this wkend, though we will be driving out with a u-haul and moving stuff...thus hard work. But, hoping to get to one of our favorite restuarants for dinner.
Sandy

I'm so happy, that you are soooooo happy, about the coming snow!!! :-) You are so cute!
ReplyDelete.♥.♥.♥.
Your worms in the candy story made me laugh, Marydon. I have fond memories of Valentine's Day when I was young too. Lovely post.
ReplyDeleteWhat great memories. I just sat with my 5 year old son a couple of days ago while he wrote his name on the back of 25 valentines for his class. This is his first year ever, and it brings tears to my eyes at how fast he and his brother are growing. I remember when I was small and we would make valentine mail boxes out of tissue boxes too. It was so fun to decorate them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing back wonderful memories! And thank you for your lovely comments on my blog, it means so much!!
Sincerely,
Melinda

Congratulations to Nanny! I loved hearing about your Valentine Memories! I have similar ones myself, but I never had an Uncle Bill to tease me so!
ReplyDeleteI remember making the Valentine boxes for school hoping mine would be the very prettiest one there but knowing the rich girls would probably be the best. But you know, theirs wasn't that much better than mine, LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteMarydon I read your post about the heart and you are so right, I had a heart attack 5 yrs. ago, not the usual symptoms you hear about. I had been having kind of dizzy spells, nothing drastic, for about 2 weeks before, just knew I felt different that day, went to the ER and told them I felt something was wrong, they took my Bp and said yes it was high but they couldn't do anything without my Dr's. permission, so they sent me on my way. I went back to work, got there and thought "No something isnt right", my Dr was out of town so went to my Moms cardiologist and they would not see me because I wasn't their patient. I was wondering if anyone was going to help me. Soooo I went to my Drs office and demanded to see another Dr. in the group and told him I wanted an EKG because I thought I might be having a problem, I have had high BP most of my life. Mind you, these were the only symptoms I had been having, just a feeling and high bp. Well they took the EKG and the Dr started patting my knee and said "It looks like you are in the process of having a heart attack, I know you are scared, but I want you to drive yourself over to the hospital (the same one I had been to 3 hrs. earlier) and tell them you need to be admitted" WHAT!!!!!!!!!! Drive myself? Where is the ambulance. So I drove myself to the hospital, needless to say scared stiff, they didnt know how to handle me as I am allergic to prednisone and iodine (THE TEST THEY USE TO CHECK FOR BLOCKAGES USES THESE) so they ambulanced me to OKC 60 miles away the next morning. It was a blod clot, they dissolved it and I was home in two days. Never doubt your feelings if you are not feeling right, the Dr. told me if I had listened to all the Drs I had tried to get help from and gone on home I would have died that day. Sorry this is so long.
Hugs
Ginger
Those are certainly fun memories. It was always hard to pick just the right cards, especially if there was someone you "really liked, not just like liked"!
ReplyDeleteThe story about Uncle Bill was funny, I'll have to "mark" my favoites next time and see if it works. My kids would probably eat them anyway!
Hugs,
Dawn
Hi Sweetie...
ReplyDeleteI guess I get to be the one to tell you Nighty Night and to sleep peacefully.
I loved this post. Congrats to your winner. She can have the chocolates. I get the real thing when I get there. I love you sweetie. Please take care of yourself. I so want you to be around for a very long time. We have lots of roads to travel together and we have lots of firsts to see together. I want to walk the shores with you and share laughter.
All my love sweetie... So Many Hugs and Kisses...Sherry/Cherry Jelly
Congrats Nanny!
ReplyDeleteI remember love decorating the shoe box every year and always waiting to see if I was going to get that 'special card' from a boy in class. What torture but what fun!
Have a great day.

Hi my dear Valentine friend! I do! I do! I do remember all of the sweet Valentine celebrations we enjoyed a time ago. It was so exciting to have that big box with the slit in the top in the front of our classroom just waiting to hold all our lovely Valentines for delivery! Sweet memories! Loved them! Hugs, Coralie
ReplyDeletemy Uncle Bill was a funny funny man too! Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment about my friend at the nursing home.
ReplyDeleteSweet memories Marydon. We use to make little Valentine boxes from shoeboxes, decorate them and take them to school to have filled by classmates. Do kids still do that? It was lots of fun in those days.
ReplyDeleteFunny story about the chocolates.
Hi Marydon,
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winner. Yummy!!
Yes, I do remember those sweet days of Valentines, decorated mailboxes and little parties with heart shape cookies. Those days went all too fast. Now we have to make new memories.
So thankful for Dr. Alan S. and your wonderful heart!!
Thanks for stopping by and your kind comments. Today is day 3 and there is dust everywhere. LOL!! But the journey is so fun!
Blessings, Celestina Marie
Sounds like Christmas at my house and I don't think they outgrow it! Your Uncle Bill sounds like he was a lot of fun! Love the post on "I love my heart". This is a good reminder that we usually know our bodies best.
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon!
ReplyDeleteLoved your memories of Valentine's Day - they sound so much like mine. I remember looking for that perfect box to save for my Valentine Box. My mother always had some pretty red or pink paper for me to cover it with and a lacy paper heart for on the front. My sweet Daddy would always bring my mom & me a pretty heart box that was decorated so elegantly, filled with chocolate delights. With NO worm holes!! Loved your story about Uncle Bill!!
Happy Valentines Day! Sherry
What sweet and fun memories... thank you for sharing and taking us on a walk down memory lane ; )
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
My sister and I used to get on our tummies and stand our valentine cards from school in the cracks between the floor boards. And how much fun to decorate our boxes!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are right...it's not the same.
I might just get on my tummy this year and play with my valentines!!
I am so glad that you came by!
