I'm from Nebraska, and I'm embarrassed that I've never heard about the women at the Canteen. I am from Lincoln thats where I grew up. I have a friend from North Platte, I should ask her what she knows about it. What an amazing group of women. I love how the 90 year old man knew instantly what North Platte meant to him, how wonderful if for only a moment he could be that 18 year old again and remember something that touched him so much.
Thank you again for a story that so touched my heart!
Fabulous post and video. What a wonderful piece of history. Sad this isn't something we learned in school in our history books. What a wonderful lesson about how one person can make a difference in someone's life; AND how together people can accomplish many great things.
I have heard of this before but thanks for the reminder. It's such a beautiful story. I sent the link to my sister whose husband is currently in Haiti, part of the troops out of Ft. Bragg.
I will try again with my comment , I wrote one earlier and it seem to get lost in the black hole!!
My husband and I found it a very evocative narration. Being English, it is not something we have heard of before. What a great bunch of ladies!!
It was lovely the story of the elderly gentleman and how the mention of the name bought his memory back to him.
It is lovely to think that North Platt meant so much to the boys passing through, a place that they had never heard of before and possibly it was the last place they were treated so well, before losing their lives.
Thank you for sharing the post and video on blogger.
Ok Marydon, I am bawling with emotion after watching this, the funny thing is your blog music was playing while he was speaking and that made it even more emotional.!! I am very patriotic, my Dad who is still living was in WWII and only 1 of 3 left in his unit. God bless the ladies for making their journey a little less scary.
That was such a great story Marydon! Thank you for sharing it. It was definitely a simpler time back then. It sounds like everybody wanted to help out in some way, during the war. I so wish my Dad was still alive, so that I could ask him if he ever made a stop in North Platte!
Dear Marydon~~ What a touching story and wonderful video! I just posted it on my facebook page...this needs to be shared with everyone. It makes your heart sing, cry and be ever so grateful to these brave men and women, past, present and future!
Thanks so much for coming over for a visit. I'm always so happy to read your sweet comments.

Oh Marydon Sweetie... This is such a beautiful post. I love it. I went and watched the movie. It tickled me so to watch the young men running from the trains, to know they were going to be happy for that 10 minutes in time. All the women, so dedicated. Much like you and Harold lighting all those candles at the holidays, out in the fields. You making all those sandwiches and soups. You are both so dedicated and you give so much of yourselves sweet friend.
I loved the part where the young lady called her Grandpa with dementia and when she mentioned North Platte, he even remembered them shining his shoes for him. That just made me tear. It was a true loving moment in his life, and so much had been robbed from him, but not that memory in his life.
Love it sweetie. Hope you had a beautiful day today. It is raining here and cool in the 50's. Felt good though and we so needed the rain.
I love you sweetie. Talk to you soon. All my love, Sherry
That was heart-warming! Thank you for sharing it. My Dad served in WWII on an aircraft carrier. I recently met a man who served on the same carrier and it was such a privilege to meet him and hear his stories. God bless those women who met the trains! Love never faileth...it always comes to meet us. God is love....

The best kind of friend is the one you could sit on a porch with, never saying a word, and walk away feeling like that was the best conversation you've had.
Stronger Than Before
"Broken wings take time to mend, Before they learn to fly again. On the breath of God they’ll soar, They’ll be stronger than before. Don’t look back into the past, What was fire now is ash. Let it all be dead and gone, The time is now for moving on."
