The wonderful old iron gates & porches are so welcoming ... some with gazebo, statues, others with fountains & ponds.
I love the romance of the sweeping entry stairs to southern homes ...
I imagine the clippity clop of the horse carriages
arriving with guests for their winter galas ...
Sweeping gowns, capes, hats with plumes ...
The majestic elegance of homes,
beneath the powerful shade trees ...
The babbling fountains ...
I wonder how many courtships
blossomed in the beautiful gardens ...
lounge chair of years gone by ...
she has her own personality & story to tell beneath these weathered boards ...
An afternoon gathering on the many rockers of her porch in the heat of the day, or the dewy
warm eves ...
In the heat of the day they gather in the yard of the old
pink 'lady' to enjoy the breeze ...
sweetly dressed in pink with her heart attic window ... can't you just picture the romance of her all dolled up inside with the lace, ribbons & bows, crafts strewn about, a soft chair & cup of tea ... maybe a mint julep?
I wonder if this home was part of a huge 'plantation' that had been parceled off for the need of monies which often was
the case ...
on the plantation except during the warm spring
& summer months ...
having their cotillion's during the winter months ... sewing in their parlors ... gathering for their
daily bible readings or passages from their
favorite books ....
Visitors usually spent months at a time because of the distances they traveled ...
Where love blossomed both in the hearts of lovers ... & in the flower beds ...
even beneath this beautiful fountain ...
did the balconies give way to seeing the soldiers during the Civil War march thru ...
or the births of many generations to begin inside these walls ...
(this beautiful home is now an awesome B&B)
What mysteries or secrets do these walls hold ...
are treasures hidden beneath the boards? ... or
messages scrawled on the boards that hold this
home strongly together ...
Marydon,
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine Ms. Scarlett O'Hara on one of those plantation porches waiting for Ashley to come back and sweep her off her feet. I love all the character that is visible throughout each of these amazing homes.
Please stop by my blog today, as I have an urgent prayer request this morning for my brother in law.

ReplyDeleteHi Marydon,
ReplyDeleteI thoroughky enjoyed the photo tour of your trip to Savannah.
My husband and I have been there many times and it is our dream someday is to live out the rest of our lives there. We reside in the northern part of Georgia right now and we gladly drive the 4 hours it takes to get there every chance we get. I was there over Labor Day with my oldest son...it was his first time there...(he lives in New Jersey)...and he LOVED it as much as I do!!
I feel alive there and at peace. Savannah has everything I love and more!!
Wishing you a wonderful weekend Dear Lady!!
Love and Hugs,
Susan
Susan ~ I could spend hours & hours writing of our loves for Savannah & Charleston ... we'd be gone in a heartbeat if it weren't for our boy!
ReplyDeleteThe romance & beauty & warmth are so overwhelming ... the history is alive & rich.
TY for coming by for a visit ... stay in touch for more starting on Monday ...

Marydon, such a beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteAs a Savannahian, I say good job! You have been able to capture some of the lesser known homes beautifully. It is only fair that those get shine. They simply glow in your fantastic photos.
The beautiful fountain in Forsyth Park is, of course, widely recognized. The Fountain was created in 1858 and received extensive restoration in 1988. Forsyth Park fountain is thought to be a copy of the one in the Place de la Concorde, by Hittorff. Forsyth Park, is still a place for major city events.
It is doubtful that the beautiful homes were part of plantations. Savannah was alway very urban (It still makes for fun musings). Thought to be the first planned and platted city in the U.S. Plantations were several miles outside of town.
There is a reason so many beautiful homes still stand. When General Sherman marched to the sea the city fathers met him a few miles outside of town. They turned over to the town with a fight. The request: Do not burn the city. He did not and we are blessed to have these beautiful homes. He set up his headquarters in one of these beautiful houses.
It warms my heart to hear so many kind comments about Savannah. It is a beautiful city.
Thank you Marydon for capturing so much of her beauty and history. Thanks, Ginger
Ginger ~ TYSM for your sweet comments & much appreciated compliment. I so love Savannah & Charleston ... the history & beauty so draws us to the heart & soul of both cities.
ReplyDeleteYour added history is so appreciated. I had such a wonderful time walking up & down these streets peeking & pic'ing.
I hope you will come back to enjoy the rest of our trip thru these beautiful states.
TTFN ~ Hugs, Marydon
