Passing the Purple Hat to Each of You

IN honor of women's history month and in memory of Erma Bombeck who lost her fight with cancer.
(Since I am the newbie with squamous cell nose cancer, & I love Erma with all my heart, I thought we'd close out this month with her special thoughts of ...)
IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER - by Erma Bombeck
(written after she found out she was dying from cancer).
I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.
I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.
I would have talked less and listened more.
I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.
I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.
I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.
I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.
I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.
I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.
I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment.
When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, 'Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.' There would have been more 'I love you's' More 'I'm sorry's.'
But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute.look at it and really see it . live it and never give it back. STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!
Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what. I second her message ...
Instead, let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.

Good morning Marydon, Glad you are on the mend, I have read that before but always love reading it again, if we could only get that mantra when we are young so we could live by it, it takes age and life's experience to get us to that wisdom, Have a Blessed Sunday, Hugs Marilou

Erma was indeed a wise woman, and a wonderfully witty person. I love this writing. It's all so true.
ReplyDeleteI love every single book Erma wrote! She was like an old friend to many of us. She had a sense of humor that would make you laugh so hard you would end up crying! I love this writing that she wrote.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping and praying you are doing so much better. Keep us posted. I work with a doctor so he keeps me updated on anything I have questions on and than there is God. I trust Him more than anyone on this earth! Love to you and many blessings! Anne
Such wonderful reminders made more poignant because of the situation and the passion with which it was written.
ReplyDeleteI am happy to see you back here and hope that your nose kept all of the cancer to itself and that it quickly becomes a distant memory.
Hugs,
Becky K.
Erma Bombeck was such a gracious woman! When she was told she could "move to the front of the line", she declined. She said there were so many people who had been waiting so much longer; she felt it just wouldn't be right for her to bump them out of the way.
ReplyDeleteYou've been in my prayers and will continue to be there.
xoxo to you, Marydon.
Love Erma!!! Good luck with the surgery and I pray all goes well.
