The story behind this wonderful event ~
His name is actually Morill Worcester (not Merrill).
In 1992 he was faced with a surplus of wreaths and hearkened back to a memorable trip he'd taken to Arlington National Cemetery when he was 12-years old. He took the wreaths to Arlington from his business in Maine and laid them on the graves of 4,000 who are laid to rest there.
The next year he decided to plan on taking 5,000 wreaths and has been doing it ever since. He said that there were only a few volunteers the first year and it took them five or six hours to place the wreaths. Now, however, he has so many helpers each year that the work is done in about an hour.
Worcester expanded the campaign and started Wreaths Across America. He is placing wreaths in each of the more than 230 State and National cemeteries and Veterans Monuments across the country.

... we couldn't do anything in this country if it wasn't for the people who gave their lives to protect us. It is a great honor to be able to come here and pay our respects. Thus, the first year there were just a few of us, and it took us 5 or 6 hours to get them placed.

ReplyDeleteGood Morning Marydon~
ReplyDeleteI received my package yesterday. Thank you so much. It is all so beautiful and sure brightened my day~which I really needed. Boston lives in Washington State. His Daddy is stationed at McChord AFB as a fire fighter. I pray if it be God's will they will move closer. I sure miss holding him. This is a sorrow I have never felt before. I hope to get to sneak in another visit in March.
I live in the country~outside of St. Joseph, Mo.
I pray you have a wonderful day!
I sure enjoyed your post today!
Christmas Wishes!
