Don't you just love the stories/tales we were told as children to keep the spirit of Christmas alive & fascinating. I remember all nestled under those mounds of quilts snuggled in bed, DETERMINED not to fall asleep to hear those hooves upon that roof ... the anticipation was overwhelming.
Mother used to make the BEST homemade peanut butter fudge ... it took us a VERY long time beating that fudge by hand to cool it down, we 5 kids took turns helping her ... we'd sit it in a pan of cold water to help cool it down. We'd scrape that pan dry of any tad of fudge on the edges.
This was the gift Mother made for family & friends, since we didn't have a lot of money ... people raved over that creamy mouth watering fudge. When the fudge was set, Mother would cut it up, wrap it & then store it away until time to distribute it. Our lives were short of threatened if we got into it.
Welllllllll! This was a challenge to find where she hid it ... & one year in particularly after tearing the house apart we found it hidden in her clothes closet ... Oh! the delicious feast we had!! Nearly sick from eating so much of it ... & barely could sit for the next few days.
Needless to say, after that we were satisfied yearly with the wee bit she saved out for us & the scrapings from the pan.
What memory do you have of being mischievous during the holidays .....
Oh girl my mom use to make peanut butter fudge too! It was and still is the best in the world.
ReplyDeleteShe makes it with marshmallow creme. Yummy!
Hi Marydon!
ReplyDeleteLove your fudge story! I remember one year my older brothers that are twins really wanted watches. Early, when parents were still sleeping on Christmas morn, they spotted two small boxes under the tree with their names on them. They couldn't resist, and carefully unwrapped one to find that it was a watch indeed, knowing that the other one was, too. They rewrapped it perfectly and told my Mom years later. She replied that she knew all along!!
Our greatest joy as kids was opening up our stockings. Mom always put a flashlight in it so we could see what was in them without turning on the lights, and we had a blast checking out what each of the other 5 kids got!! We carried on this tradition, so my girls have always gotten up at around 2:30-3:00 to check their stockings with the flashlights tucked in them. Even the 23 year old that is out on her own spends the night on Christmas Eve so she doesn't miss out on the fun with the two that are still here! LOVE IT!!
Thanks for sharing your fun memory and this lovely shop! Also love the Christmas trees around the world!! Awesome!!
Have a joyful week, full of all kinds of loveliness!
HUGS,
Becky
Hi Marydon... you are so cute! I can just picture you, finding that fudge and eating it and making yourself sick! Then having a sore bum for a week besides! I love sharing our memories... I did my share of being "naughty" too at Christmas time... my little sister Jill and I always snooped, trying to see if we would get anything for Christmas...they always hid things in their bedroom closet... my daddy was wise to us though, and one year he rigged his and mama's bedroom with strings so when we opened the door to go in and snoop (which we were told in no uncertain terms NOT to), the strings all broke... we were BUSTED on that one! tee hee hee... can't wait to hear more of your special memories! xoxo Julie Marie PS The photos are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon! I love that story....My grandmother made fudge every christmas too she would put cherries in it and it just melted in your mouth! what I would do for a piece of peanut butter and chocolate cherry fudge. Store bought just isn't good enough... it has to be homemade. Have a nice evening! hugs, Jennifer
ReplyDeleteThese are the best stories. I wish kids today knew what Christmas use to be like many years ago. I guess what I am trying to say is that I wish they fully appreciated Christmas like many of us did years ago. It wasn't always about the presents.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story Marydon. Lots of sweet memories of Christmas past.
ReplyDeleteWhat a touching memory!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna dig down my past and enjoy again the Christmas thrill I had as a child.

Ooh My Gosh PB...
ReplyDeleteI can just see you, eating away, all of you, eating away. Oh and your Moma so furious, and I am sure so were the friends who always expected to receive that fudge. I bet you didn't do that again. I can honestly say I have never eaten peanut butter fudge, I will be expecting some in my stocking.
Oh I so loved my tour of the store in town. I have my items all picked out. Oh my gosh, I have to tell you that Santa standing on that shelf with the long beard, and the little piggie is on the floor, oh my gosh can you just see him in the house for the holidays? And what about the little feathered trees? Oh my gosh, even that big clock. I would love walking through this shop.
And that little gingerbread man on that crock. How precious is that. I tell you we do not have shops out here like this. Our shops are all commercialized. So sad.
Oh sweetie, thank you so much for my tour today. Did you and Harold take his car today? I love it.
I will talk to you soon. I have had a very busy day. I will email you about it.
I love you sweetie. All my love, CJ
I loved reading your story about the peanut butter fudge. My husband makes his mom's recipe of peanut butter fudge. He likes to let it harden a bit before eating. Fortunately I'm not a huge fan of peanut butter so I'm not tempted to get into the stash. LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays ~ Sarah
I can just see you all discovering that sweet little jackpot! Your little shops look like they hold a jackpot of goodies too. Have a fantastic week full of holiday cheer!
ReplyDeleteThat was a lovely story. My Mom always made fudge this time of the year too. In fact it was the only time she would make it.
ReplyDeleteI have continue the tradition, but I also make it all year round.
Willow
Such sweet memories Marydon. Oh, how I love fudge!

Good morning Marydon,
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet childhood story...no pun intended :-) My memories of Christmas as a child are my fondest memories. It was such a wonderful time, I think that's why I love Christimas so much. Thank you for sharing your story with us. Have a wonderful new week.
Hugs and Kisses,
♥Ana
How delightful your blog is!!!
ReplyDeleteI can remember one year searching and searching for where my mom hid the presents, and eventually finding them...she had gotten me the doll I wanted so very badly...it was torture having to wait another 2 weeks to play with that wonderful doll!!
Blessings ~
:) T
Oh what a cute/memory story!
ReplyDeleteI was an only child and guess I didn't get into much Christmas mischief. -le sigh- But I vaguely think I remember finding a package, before the 25th, one time...
Oh fudge! Loved your story. I cannot remember getting into any mischief, but perhaps my mother would tell it differently. I do remember one year (in Holland in the early 50's) when my aunt dressed up as St. Nicholas and came knocking at our door. I recognized her immediately, but my youngest sister, who had been nothing but bad all year, was so scared that she hid under a bed and never came out until the next morning!
ReplyDeleteThe verification word is 'cusno'. I guess that's why I wrote 'Oh, fudge!' See I'm always good. LOL
"--barely could sit" wasn't due to a stomachache, was it? Good for Mom.
ReplyDeleteGreat Christmas memory. Thanks for sharing.
My older brother and I also hunted every year for the place where Mama hid the gifts. We'd always find them; and she'd be angry. One year, she put them in a locked wardrobe; and my bad by clever brother made a "key" from a flattened nail. It worked! And we once again had to suffer the consequences. But you know, contrary to what Mama said, our surprise was not ruined -- just heightened!
ReplyDeleteGod has smiled on me; and my children never go hunting. They are lovely and patient for Christmas! (I must have done something right!)
My daughter especially loves fudge and you've reminded me that I'll need to make some. :)
ReplyDeleteThe photos are lovely - what a beautiful Christmas scene.
As for my naughty behavior as a child around Christmas, I can't honestly recall any. I never liked to snoop for gifts because I like the surprise. I suppose the worst thing I did (and that my sisters did) was count the number of gifts that we each received to make sure we had an equal number each, which was very selfish. My parents always made sure that somehow or another the gifts added up and funny thing is, I still sort of do that today when I'm buying gifts for my parents - in otherwords, 3 gifts each for them... :O
Funny memory. My sister and I were often guilty of peeling back the wrapping on the presents. Just a little. And a little more...
ReplyDeleteHi marydon,
ReplyDeleteI have finally got to visit your new blog. Loved the story, just reminded me of my childhood. My grandmother had so many quilts on the bed we could hardly turn over. lol
What great shops, i am looking forward to our daughter coming this week so w can get out and about.
now let me go and bookmark your new address.
Blessings,to you,
Sue
I love your story!! I don't remember any naughty stories around Christmas time. But, I did like to snoop. One time I was going through my mom's dresser and found caps for the cap gun that my brother was getting for his birthday. I was so excited about finding them that I grabbed them and went running into the living room where the whole family was and gave them to him. I got in trouble to say the least!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Marydon,
ReplyDeleteI loved hearing your memories of Christmas ... and your Mother making fudge.
It is great to remember these happy and special times.
I have enjoyed looking at all your Christmas pictures.
Happy week
Hugs
Carolyn
One year I wanted a specific doll, so when my Mom was in the bathroom I crawled behind the tree and opened a present that I thought was the doll and it was!
ReplyDeleteI was so happy but I had to get the paper on it fast because Mom was coming back out and I didn't want her to know that I had been behind the tree.
I'm not sure if I ever told her I had done that.
Melinda
What a delightful childhood story!
ReplyDeleteMy sister (2 years older than me)and I shared a bedroom. We would go to bed early every Christmas Eve and then we giggled and talked until the wee hours. We would lose count of how many times my dad would knock loudly on their bedroom wall, which meant...Be Quiet Girls! We would just laugh all the harder! I guess he had mercy on us knowing that we were excited and just couldn't help ourselves!
Rhonda
I love reading all the great comments you get on your post.
ReplyDeletePatsy
Oh, peanut butter fudge ... DROOL! That is a wonderful story. :) xx
ReplyDeleteYum, that peanut butter fudge sounds delicious! Such great memories, Marydon.
ReplyDeleteThat story is so CUTE! That fudge sounds like it was delicious!
ReplyDeleteI remember wanting a watch so badly that I kept unwrapping presents and then wrapping them back till I found it. I still can't believe I ever did that!!!
Hi Marydon, what a wonderful memory of the hidden fudge. I can just see you kids eating yourself sick. I am sure it was so good it was worth it.
ReplyDeleteLove the pics. Always lots of inspiration you share.
Now I'd like to make somne fudge!!
Hugs, Celestina Marie
My Mom made peanut butter fudge too. It did not always set up. No matter if we ate it with a spoon or if it was cut into pieces. It always was wonderful....You just jogged my memory.. sandi
ReplyDeleteOh Marydon, you crack me up! The comment you left for me on my blog today about your talent, had me in stiches!!!! Then I pop over here to read your post and am laughing again over you getting sick from eating all of that peanut butter fudge!I'm afraid I don't have any stories that would top that!
ReplyDeleteSo glad that we are now friends!
Lee Ann
Haha...picturing you hiding out in the closet eating fudge....that's too funny!
ReplyDeleteI think the best holiday from my childhood would be the year I was about 7 years old and got a Mrs. Beasly doll for Christmas...we lived in Hawaii then.
When I was an adult...that would be the year my husband gave me a big heavy box...which turned out to have two bricks and an oak log in it..to hide the tiny box..he melted down some gold nuggets he had found (we had a friend who had a dental lab and he showed him how to do that), made a mold of a ring and bought a diamond to place in it...since then I wear a handmade diamond wedding ring! He had felt bad because I was wearing a cheapy ring he bought me when we had been dating :) I'll try and get a picture of it this week :)
Marydon your story made me laugh because it was so much like one from my childhood. My mother always made these cookies that were made from dates and rolled in coconut. I could not resist them, and one year she hid them in a little train case so sure that I we would never find them. Well, I did and over the space of about a week, I had eaten every one. My mother had been so sure that they would not be found that she didn't think to check the case before it was time to put them in the tins and take them to friends. Well, needless to say, I was in sooo much trouble and I never did that again.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the dearest comment on my blog about my hair. You made my day sweet.
hugs
